Quotations from In the Shadow of the Sword by Tom Holland
His history, far from tracing changes in the doctrines and institutions of the Church, aimed to demonstrate that they had never changed in the slightest. And Christianity itself? Christianity, Eusebius presumed, had existed since the dawn of time: “For, obviously, we must regard the religion proclaimed in recent years to every nation through Christ’s teaching as none other than the first, the most ancient, and the most primitive of religions.”6 To many of us today, familiar as we are with Neanderthal burial sites and Cro-Magnon cave art, this claim does not seem obvious at all.

When Churchill Slaughtered Sheep and Stalin Robbed a Bank - Giles Milton (Quotations)
page 76 His method was as ingenious as it was simple. He ran a large gang of thieves who stole on his behalf. He would then take possession of the stolen goods and wait for the various thefts to be announced in the local news-sheets. When this happened, he would announce that his ‘thief takers’ had recovered the stolen items. These were duly returned to their rightful owners, but only on the payment of a substantial reward.

The Politically Incorrect Guide to Capitalism - Robert P. Murphy (Quotes)
The “progressive” Herbert Hoover Whereas the American economy had purged itself of previous depressions generally within a year or two, the Great Depression lingered partly because wages were held above their natural market-clearing levels. Workers could not be rearranged in light of the new circumstances because the primary method of coordination—the signals provided by accurate market prices and wages—was thwarted by Hoover and later by FDR. The New Deal didn’t fix the Depression The NRA was discovering it could not enforce its rules.

Excerpts from Suggestible You: The Curious Science of Your Brain's Ability to Deceive, Transform, and Heal (by Erik Vance)
page 6 The practitioner began reassuring Dee, saying, “It doesn’t matter whether this religion works or not. God loves your child.” Over the next couple of minutes, everything changed for Dee. She let go of herself and put her trust in God. The world was transformed from a place where her son was dying and her community was helpless to save him into a world in which everything was perfect and God’s love enveloped her family like a warm, comforting blanket.

Excerpts from Homo Deus - (Yuval Noah Harari)
I liked the author’s first book but I didn’t like this one. I read a little from it. Writing history of future is a bit more difficult than writing the history of past and beginning your book on the premise that death will be overcome is not a good first step either.
Because if it’s correct, than you lose almost all basis for human society, psychology and traditions and you cannot make a further plausible guess, it’s more difficult to imagine a society where death doesn’t happen, than a society with sentient robots.

Excerpts from The One From the Other: A Bernie Gunther Novel (by Philip Kerr)
page 17 My only choice was between the disastrous and the unpalatable. A very German choice. We both knew I had little alternative but to agree to what they wanted.
page 24 “Too much arak,” whispered Eichmann. “It’s the local drink. A sort of aniseed-flavored grape spirit. Avoid it if you can.”
page 25 “Haganah is a Jewish militia group and intelligence service.” “You mean, they’re a terrorist organization.”
page 26 “The Haganah want us to supply them with guns to use against the British here in Palestine,” he said.

Review and Excerpts: The Mote in God's Eye, Larry Niven & Jerry Pournelle
When Jerry Pournelle died last year, I noticed that I didn’t read any of his Science Fiction novels. In a reddit thread after him, people suggested his books as good and this one was best or one-of-the-best of him.
It’s an old book, from 1960’s and some of the quirks can be understandable. However most of the ideas in the book, most of the time reader spends is not in a world of the future, it’s in a world of the past.

Excerpts from 10% Happier - Dan Harris
I read the book in April 2018. It tells benefits of meditations and such practices from a once skeptic perspective. There are interviews with Eckhart Tolle, Deepak Chopra and Dalai Lama, and Mark Epstein, whom the author likes most (as the most sensible.) Overall it’s a nice and sincere introduction to Buddhist-living in a modern world with daily responsibilities and a highly competitive job.
page 4 Once you get the hang of it, the practice can create just enough space in your head so that when you get angry or annoyed, you are less likely to take the bait and act on it.

Quotes from 'Stop Being a Slave'
“Amelia Boone, the Michael Jordan of adventure racing, said, “I believe the key to self-sufficiency is breaking free of the mindset that someone, somewhere, owes you something and will come to your rescue.””
Break the Chain: Stop Being a Slave
“Once we’re bought, it’s hard to get out. While we all start out wanting more independence, we increasingly live lifestyles that make us dependent.”
